Behind the Scenes of National Barcode Day
For the past few years at Barcoding, Inc., we have celebrated the barcode on June 26th. We would celebrate across all offices (in the United States and in Canada) with cake, snacks, and drinks if it was happy hour. Each year, we would create buttons, wallpapers, and t-shirt designs to celebrate. Check out the full Flickr gallery here from 2019.
The Celebration of #SupplyChainGeekDay
Since the beginning of Barcoding, it has been important to us to honor and recognize what makes our supply chain success possible — the people behind the technology.
On June 26, 2020, we hosted a virtual celebration (#SupplyChainGeekDay) to honor all of our #SupplyChainGeeks. We celebrated the amazing people who make the supply chain run and the essential employees who stepped up during the most disrupted of times.
The #SupplyChainGeekDay campaign was multifaced — promotional efforts focused on digital strategies (integrated social and email marketing). The social campaign was one of our biggest campaigns yet with over 300 posts (plus 1,000 interactions, 800+ clicks, and 25,000 impressions). We created some fun campaign assets including our free digital zoom+teams backgrounds and the Legendary Creatures t-shirt.
Go Big or Go Home.
This year, we decided to do something even BIGGER. We wanted everyone across the world to celebrate the barcode’s birthday. Our VP of Marketing & Strategic Partnerships, Jody Costa, came up with the amazing idea of creating our own national day. Thanks to the National Day Calendar, and our founding partners Datalogic and ScanSource, National Barcode Day is now official! Save the date for Saturday, June 26, 2021, for the first official national barcode day! #NationalBarcodeDay
About National Barcode Day
National Barcode Day commemorates more than 40 years of efficiency and accuracy that began on June 26, 1974, when a clerk scanned a 10-pack of Wrigley’s Juicy Fruit gum at a Marsh supermarket in Troy, OH. On that day, the barcode system invented by George Lauer, an IBM engineer, began to change the world.
Barcodes contain a wealth of information, including pricing, product, dates, manufacturer, and shipping. They are ideal for tracking inventory and sales, but they do so much more than that. Almost every industry uses barcodes, and they likely make your life easier without you even knowing it. Barcodes are everywhere…but where did they come from? Check out this timeline of the milestones of this world-changing technology.
